What to Expect at Our Warhammer 40K Tournaments

Whether you’re a first-time player or just new to the tournament scene, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know. We want to make sure you have a fun and enjoyable experience, so here’s what you can expect before and during the tournament.

Before the Event: What You Need to Do

1. Sign Up for the Tournament

Once you’ve decided to join, the first step is to register for the event. This usually involves registering via BCP and paying a registration fee, which helps cover the cost of organizing the event and providing things like terrain and prizes. Make sure to sign up early, as some tournaments may have limited spots!

2. Build Your Army

In Warhammer 40K, you play with an army of miniatures that represents your forces on the battlefield. For the tournament, you’ll need to build an army based on a point limit (e.g., 2000 points). You can choose from any of the factions in Warhammer 40K, and your army must follow the current rules in the official rulebook and any FAQ updates. Its recommended that if this is your first tournament you use the Warhammer 40k App created by Games Workshop to do this.

Here’s what you need to know when building your army:

  • Army List: Once you’ve chosen your units, you’ll need to submit a list of them. This is a document that shows exactly which units you’re bringing, their point costs, and other important information. Many tournaments require you to submit your list online before the event, so check the event details for the deadline. This list can be exported from the Warhammer 40K App
  • Painted Models: While you don’t always need to have your army fully painted, it’s always a good idea to bring a battle-ready army (fully painted models that are at least base-coated). If you want to compete for the Best Painted Army award, your army must be fully painted and follow a theme.

3. Submit Your Army List

Most tournaments ask players to submit their army lists a few days before the event check the event pack for details. This ensures everything is legal and balanced. Be sure to submit your list on time—some events may penalize players who submit late lists.

4. Pack Your Gear

On the day of the tournament, make sure to bring the following:

  • Your army (with all models properly assembled and based).
  • Your army list (this can often be submitted online in advance, but bring a copy just in case).
  • Dice, measuring tools, and tokens (you’ll need these for gameplay, such as measuring distances, rolling for attacks, and tracking wounds).
  • Chapter Approved: Mission Deck Players use these card drawing secondary objectives throughout the game
  • A rulebook or reference materials in the 40k app (If this is your first tournament we recommend bringing a deck of mission cards rather then drawing secondary’s from the table top battles app).
  • A positive attitude (tournaments are about fun and fair competition!).

On the Day of the Tournament: What to Expect

1. Arriving at the Venue

A few days before the event pairing will usually be drawn which you can check via the BCP app. When you arrive at the venue, you’ll need to check your table number and and find your table. Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to go—tournament organizers will be there to guide you.

You’ll also get the opportunity to meet other players and chat about your favourite factions or army lists!

2. Setting Up

Once you find your table where your first game will take place. You’ll need to set up your army and arrange the terrain on the table that will be used during the game. Most tournaments have maps with measurements on how to arrange the terrain (shown below), but don’t worry—help is available if you’re not sure.

3. Tournament Structure

Most tournaments run with multiple rounds of games throughout the day. Each round will involve a 1v1 game, and the matchups are typically based on:

  • Round 1: Random pairing with other players.
  • Round 2 and beyond: Players are paired based on their performance in the previous round. If you win a round, you’ll likely face another player who has also won.

You will typically have 2.5 to 3 hours to play each game, with a break for lunch in between rounds.

4. Playing the Game

Once your opponent is at the table and ready to play, you’ll start the game! Each round will involve taking turns, moving your units, and resolving combat. Don’t be afraid to ask your opponent questions about rules or strategies—they’re usually more than happy to help, especially if it’s your first tournament.

Make sure you keep an eye on the time to ensure you complete your game within the allotted time limit. Tournament organizers may provide time warnings during each round to help you stay on track.

5. Tournament Rules

In case of any disagreements about the rules, the event will have judges available to help make a final decision. Judges are there to ensure fair play, and their rulings are final. Most players work together to resolve small disputes on their own, but judges are always ready to step in if needed.

6. Scoring

You’ll earn points based on your performance in the game. We recommend tacking scores vias the table top battles app. This app lets you add your primary and secondary objects and provides a helpful reminder and the end of each turn to keep the scores fair.

At the end of each round, your scores need to be submitted to BCP, so at the end of the event scores can be tallied and awards will be given to the top players.

Awards and Recognition

At the end of the tournament, there will be a short awards ceremony to recognize the best players, as well as special achievements like:

  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place: Prizes are given to the top performers based on their tournament score.
  • Best Painted Army: For the most beautifully painted and themed army.

There may also be smaller, fun awards for someone who comes in last place.

After the Tournament

Once the tournament is over, feel free to mingle with other players, chat about your games, and maybe even plan for the next event. Many players stay to talk about the tournament, share tips, or discuss upcoming events while waiting for the awards ceremony.
